2011 'Best Of' Weddings Part II | Boston Wedding Photographers

2011 was a ground breaking year for us and our business. We photographed 32 weddings and another 20 or so portrait and commercial jobs. 22 weddings in and around Boston and Massachusetts, 2 down on Cape Cod, 1 in Vermont, 2 in Rhode Island, 1 in Miami Beach, 1 in the Florida Keys, 1 around Lake Tahoe and 2 in our old hometown of Monterey, CA. So, we put a few miles on our rolling camera bags and loved every minute of it.

With the gratitude and help from our clients we were named to The Knot's 'Best Of' Boston wedding photographers for 2012 and also awarded with WeddingWire's Bride's Choice for 2012. We can't thank our clients enough for choosing us to be there and document their wedding. Thank you, thank you, thank you! A few weeks back, we ended our CA work trip / vacation with a stop to Muir Beach. And we lucked out with a spectacular dusk, mild weather, no fog and gorgeous west coast light. We highly recommend a stop to this beach if you're in the area, as long as you don't get very car sick as the winding road in can be pretty treacherous. It was a perfect stop on the way to the airport and so was the delicious Chinese food in SF, nothing beats it. Take a look:

Bridal Shoes | A Pair to Face Adversity

I don't know about you but when Randall andI pack up for a long weekend I bring more shoes than days we will be away.I have to have a good pair of walking shoes, in case we see a good place to hikearound for some photos. And when we are done taking photos I will need some nice shoes fordinner out or a movie, and maybe they should be heels. Oh, there's a poolat the hotel? Flip flops would be perfect. What if it's chilly, ahh, bring theslippers too. But what it we go to a pub for a snack, surely I can't wear myhiking shoes and flip flops would just not do and I don't want to be overdressed…..I digress. This isn't about my intricately planned shoe wear, this story is about a very thought out day by a verythoughtful bride.

Who knew it could snow 10 inches the weekbefore Halloween. In Mass it hadn't snowed really in October since 1929, andeven then it was nothing like this! Call it global climate change or call itmother nature testing the spirit of all couples planning for a beautiful fallwedding. Call it a nightmare foropen-toed light pink satin pumps! These are the kind of shoes Cinderella wouldhave a hard time leaving on Prince Charming's palace stairs.

Imagine this: 10 inches of snow the nightbefore your well planned "fall" wedding; power is out at the venue- the Publick House; theyare cooking with gas stoves and powering enough light for the chandeliers overthe dance floor with a generator; candles line every table. Good news is it'snot that cold out and most the guests can make it. In the face of adversity this bride was agem, she looked mother nature in the eye and said "fine - we will have asnow ball fight in October!" and she did.

So the pink satin shoes made it throughthe ceremony, cocktail hour, and the first dance. Alas they did not make itthrough the night, a switch up was made for ivory flip flip pumps. The ivorypumps were the same height as the pink satin pumps so the dress was neverdragging. A must if you plan on heirloom packing your dress for your futuredaughters wedding.

Guys always claim they have a brass pairin the face of adversity. This bride had three pairs.

Once upon a time a bride emails all herbridesmaids with a vague email about a cute pair of yellow flats, comfy andclassy, with a touch of hip sprinkled on top. A couple months later the wedding day is uponus. Bride with little yellow flats and a bridesmaid with little yellow flats.Bridesmaid mortified "On no! I didn't understand your email, I bought theshoes, I thought that you wanted us to buy them!" Bride "Yeah,I did, I really liked them, I thought you guys would too." This littlescenario isn't bad…only the one bridesmaid who actually bought them felt bad,but she was soon over it because the shoes were so perfect for the beautiful rollinghills of Riverside Farm in Vermont.

To match or not to match is a bigquestion. Fully loaded like a baked potato. As a bride you can let your girlschoose their own footwear (they might do this anyway, there is always onebridesmaid rebel without a cause) or you can request they all wear the sameshoes. All I ask is that the shoes are cute! It is so much fun when all thegirls come matching, dressed to the 9's with their different personalitiesshining through their well planned shoe decisions.

But, here's a little food forthought and this is all hypothetical and as far as I can remember this has nothappened, yet. What if the bridesmaids all bring their own unique shoes and oneupstages the brides shoes!?? Maybe the bride should just see all of the shoes,just in case…

It's so nice to look back at this summer wedding and not only because winter is quickly approaching. Trinh and Bradford worked hard to incorporate their different backgrounds into what turned out to be a great day. We scheduled in time for more creative photos of just the bride and groom which always makes for a relaxed and memorable experience before the reception gets underway. They chose Marina Bay in Quincy for the backdrop and we had enough time to make amazing images and of course to get some ice cream (a must for those hot afternoons). Take a look:

I was a bit like a kid in a candy store when Ashley said she didn't really know where to do their engagement photos. She said they were up for anything, but I'm not sure if she knew what that meant to me. Nothing like Pandora's box but I always try to have a primo location up my sleeve. Theresa and I had drove by this place at least a year earlier and we knew it would be a great shooting shot. The No Trespassing signs made the logistics a bit iffy but you have to love it when a plan comes together!

We were psyched to have another wedding at Zukas Hilltop Barn a few months back. And yes, finally just getting a chance to blog about it now, we know. Her name was also Theresa, even a Theresawith an "H" (that is the correct spelling after all ;) Theresawas a practical bride, but a shoe connoisseur all the same. The shoe of choicewas a silver flat fit for a queen. Beautiful stones and strappy flats - nothingcan be more comfortable for one of the most demanding days on a woman's feet.She said they were like walking on little clouds (or something very similar tothat). After shaking off my "oh, look, they're so pretty" daze Ifound some good light and went to work crafting a fabulous shoe shot.

I have to say, once thebride slips into the dress there is this transformation and it's almost likeshe will never be the same woman again. She becomes the princess that shealways imagined and is pretty much living a dream. Someone noteworthy, but who has seemed to slipped my mindonce said something about fulfilling dreams. Well, this must have been one ofthose moments. Back on track now- Theresa's mom came to the rescue and startedto slip the satiny sandals, (no bending over with this perfect du.) First theleft and then the cutest flower girl ever, rushes in to save the day (the two-year old to therescue!). No way could she let Theresa's mom be the only one helping the mostbeautiful bride ever put her shoes on. So cute, her blonde curls framing her charminglittle face!

Shoes on, matrons and maids in tow,Theresa set off for some snazzy photos with Randall and I. First shoefaux pa andonly faux pa. The gemstones on the shoes got caught in the internal workings ofthe dress. You know, nobody could tell, but I think it bugged Theresa a littlebit. Side note - ladies, I recommend trying the whole shebang one last time theday before, do a lap around your friends house (who is stashing the dress foryou). Tip for the ultra prepared - I don't usually carry silicone grease orVaseline around but I think that would have done the trick with smoothing theedged of the gemstones enough to keep them off the hem. Maybe…

Gems sticking or not - those sparklyslippers made their way all around the New England Aquarium's waterfront, chatted withevery guest like the best host knows how and lit up the dance floor. How fastthe day flys by when you are having fun!

Last weekend we were truly lucky to have been chosen to document Nikki and Mich's wedding right on Miami Beach at the Newport Beachside Resort. We couldn't have asked for a better time to get away, for work and a little rest and relaxation. I was lucky to get Theresa off the beach at all. We were so spoiled when we lived in Monterey, with the beach only a few blocks from our house so it was nice to be spoiled again, if only for a few short days. We did find time in between shooting a few events and the beach time to make a few images around Miami. Found some nice light right on the coast and you can't get much better than that. On our last day we found the time to stop at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and it's amazing! If anyone is getting married there please let us know we would love to shoot your wedding!! Enjoy!

We were super excited when Alyson and Lynn over at Zukas Hilltop Barn emailed and wanted to use some of our photographs for their upcoming ad and feature in Bride and Groom Magazine. From the first wedding we photographed at Zukas Hilltop Barn, both Theresa and I knew we wanted to work there more. When A.J. emailed and said Jenna really wanted to have the engagement shoot at the private stable in Sudbury where she keeps her horse, Bailey, I was completely sold. Immediately I imaged an entire rustic scene, tall grasses, fences, barns and of course beautiful light. I wasn't disappointed. Add to the mix that Jenna and A.J. are so playful and into each other I barely had to direct at all and amazing moments were happening one after the other. Thanks guys for being amazing and can't wait for the wedding next year at The Fruitlands Museum. Now take a look:

Every Bride Should Have Secret Affair with Dr. Scholl | Bridal Shoes

Anyone who is a shoe slave has met Dr. Scholl's high heel inserts. These babies are a must have when you have to be on your feet all day. The faint of heart don't wear heels on their feet all day. It takes a special kind of woman to do this on a daily bases. The woman that does this will do it for various reasons:

1 - She has to for work, dress code or what not
2 - She doesn't like the look of her legs without heels
3 - How could she not wear them?!!?! (some might say OMG here)

Now on the day of the wedding you may not find yourself in any of the above categories. Have no fear, there are exercises you can do to get your heels in shape! Side note- I have so so many ideas they will not fit in this one blog post, alas I will have to mention a few today.

Bring the friendly Dr. Scholl on your first date. That's right, it's not cheating if you are upfront. Tell him the truth, it could go like this "Oh Mr./Mrs. shoe sales person, I brought these along too!" Just hand over the inserts, they should even slide them right in the shoes for you (if they are new of course). This is the best way to insure that your shoes will fit properly and at maxim comfort level. You will be gellin' on the day of like none other.

Super selfish side note - Please, please, please don't stick the insoles in there so well I can't pull them out for the fancy shoe photo. Also, if they are sticky and I pull them out, if there is any dirt - not good. Even if you do stick them in and I don't feel comfortable pulling them out, we can still get a classy photo…End rant now.
Last and final note - don't let it show! If possible trim any excess insole peaking out under your toes. Nobody will know you're cheating and besides is wearing an insole really cheating?

Learning the story of each couple is one of our favorite parts of being wedding photographers. It's the little things, the struggles to stay together, to make it work, the little everyday kindnesses, love overcoming everything. We are so lucky to document the first day of our couples married life together, to be a witness to it. We've had a number of couples whose stories involve finding a way to make a long distant relationship work and Becca and Jason are too familiar with it. We even shot part of their engagement session in South Station in Boston because they spent way too much time in there waiting for the commuter rail, or saying good-bye or hugging hello. They chose the amazing Wequassett Resort down in Chatham Cape Cod for the wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony right on the ocean and despite a little fog and some chilly temperatures everything turned out perfect. Fancy Flowers, the band Men in Black and Delicious Desserts rounded out the vendor team. Now take a look:

A Dilemma to Dye For

Do you have the perfect color scheme for your wedding, or damn near perfect. (Please excuse my colorful language.) Often the hues you choose for your wedding can really shape your day. Colors set moods, they can brighten your day or accidentally blind your guests (hopefully not the latter). I digress.

If you are like me, close doesn't always cut the mustard. Sometimes I can't leave the house if my shoes don't match my outfit (Randall can vouch for this). I have to march my butt back up stairs and change items of clothing until my shoes match.

Quirky side note - I like to choose the shoes I am going to wear before I choose the outfit.

If you are going bold, out of season, or just off the charts, you may find it difficult to locate shoes that match your dress or heaven forbid the bridesmaids dresses…insert sound effects here - dun dun dun. Dye-able shoes might be the route for you.

A couple of quick notes about dye-able wedding shoes:

1) They don't always come out like promised. (Have no fear, not like a bad new hairdresser, you can go buy another pair.)

2) If it is hot, they could run off on you. (I will hold the puns on this one, not funny). But seriously, I have seen this happen, and blue feet are only justifiable if the shoes are too tight on your toes. Not a big problem if you do not change into a second pair of shoes part way through the day.

3) You don't always have to dye a dye-able shoe, if it matches go with it. Beware that sometimes (not always, as seen in the below image) the dye-able shoes are super super white and in the daylight they can appear blue white. A change most dresses don't see under daylight. Like any good astronaut, test, test, test.

We recently had a bride with these wonderful Coloriffics platforms. She did not dye them, no need. Good thing too, because it turned out to be a muggy day.

Shoes are a cause worth dyeing for if it makes the outfit! Here's 3 variations on a theme...

After we photographed Theresa and Andy's engagement shoot we knew their wedding was going to be a good one. They are both super chill and very silly with each other = killer images. The Marriott Long Wharf Hotel, St. Agatha's church and the Aquarium made the backdrop for the day. Despite a little rain off and on, we worked the beautiful light to get a ton of spectacular images (had a tough time narrowing it down for this post). Enjoy!

I'm really glad Jocelyn and Tim decided to have their engagement session at Southern New Hampshire University. That's where it all started for them, at college, in a calculus class. The only thing I ever got out of a calculus class was a ton of sweat and tears, but for them it worked out into a great relationship. Can't say it enough how cool these images are that they tie in to the personal story of their life together. Not to mentioned we found some great spots, worked the beautiful late evening light and have a blast while we did it. All these photos really scream summertime to me, maybe it was the heat or the warm light or the college setting but the song Summertime should be the soundtrack on this one. Take a look as a few of the favorites:

This first series works shooting through the branches of a great old Willow tree.

Add some strong backlight and voilà!

They had to break out the Bruins jerseys so I matched it with some moody lighting as the sun was setting.

We have a few exciting weeks coming up with a wedding this weekend up in Vermont and then off to Cali once again for sun and fun up in Sonoma and a wedding around the gorgeous Monterey Bay. Can't wait!

Everybody knows a girl who loves shoes. To my friends, I am that girl. I have to admit that I have my fair share of shoes but one solid advantage to my lust for shoes is my motivation to hunt out a fabulous shoe shot at each wedding. I have decided to dedicate a monthly blog post about shoes. I want to highlight our brides’ shoes, shoe ideas, shoe recommendations and most of all beautiful shoes! I will jump in time through our wedding photography and highlight awesome shoes. Randall and I are proud to say our most memorable shoe moment of 2010 was September in Monterey Ca. (ok into our DeLorean as we go back in time….)

There we were in Chelsea's bridal suite at the Monterey Hyatt. Bridesmaids and mothers alike waiting as the beautiful blushing bride opens a velvet box filled with luxurious jewelry, a gift from the groom on the dawn of one of the milestone days of their lives. Her face lights up with joy as she pulls out the gorgeous necklace. Ohhs and ahhs are heard around the room. There is still one box left. As Chelsea slides the paper off the box she knows what this one is. Lifting the lid she lets out a shriek of joy, the energy in the room raises to an 11! The groom had found her the most perfect Christian Louboutin stiletto heels. They matched her gown like none other. A beautiful shoe needs an awesome photo and like any good model these shoes worked the light and the dance floor all night.

Tip for you grooms out there – if your girl loves her shoes, you already know 1 quick way to her heart ;)

It's easy to photograph Lisa and Shawn. They are so into each other, so quiet and so gentle and we couldn't have lucked out any more with a picture perfect warm Boston day. They chose The Harvard Club of Boston for their reception, the Public Gardens for a few family and bridal party photos and Saint Paul Church in Cambridge for their ceremony. Sometimes running around in the city can pose a few logistical issues (beside Theresa and I running around) but we had a ton of fun and made amazing images along the way. The flowers arrangements were by the talented Nature's Design and the entire staff at The Harvard Club was top-notch. Take a look:

Back to weddings! Ok, as our season is quickly gearing up and approaching full swing we wanted to get our posts back to basics, back to what we're all about - weddings. We're so glad Becca and Jason asked if we could pull off a Photo Booth for their rehearsal night dinner. First and most importantly their guests LOVED it! Ok, at first it was all the young kids, but once all the adults had a cocktail in them it was ON. We were pleasantly surprised at how much fun everyone had with the setup - it was tethered to my laptop so once the guests snapped their own photo, with a remote, the image came up on the laptop for all to see = instant gratification. I think that really helped people get into it once they could see the results and play around and get all sorts of silly. We made prints that evening and had them on a table at the reception the next night for their guests to pick up, overall it was a great success. We had the great pleasure of heading down to the Cape for an amazing wedding at Wequassett Resort and Golf Club in Chatham last weekend. It was a bit on the chilly side, but not cold enough for Theresa and I to miss out on getting our beach time in. We were truly spoiled while living in Monterey, CA. The beach was about a mile from our house and we always made time to get a run in or a little r and r. There is something almost romantic about having the ocean, the surf and the sand a part of your day to day life. Somewhere in between a Hemingway novel and Jimmy Buffett. Well, it's something to dream about....but for now take a look at a few photographs we made in between the wedding activities:

Boston Brain Tumor Ride 2011 | National Brain Tumor Society

For the second year in a row Theresa and I volunteered for the annual Boston Brain Tumor Ride put together by the National Brain Tumor Society. It's been a decade since my Dad passed away from a very aggressive brain tumor, and my Mom's cancer has been in remission for a number of months now. So you can see this organization and their mission to raise awareness and raise money to fight brain tumors is a cause we find truly significant.

We woke up early to severe rain, but by some miracle from the time we arrived at the ride in Waltham until the moment the last award was given out, it held off. Spirits were high and all the generous people were out to have a good time for a great cause. One of the teams, Team Bunny, had raised an amazing $250,000 in only 5 or so years. Crazy impressive! Friends of Boston's Homeless | Beyond Shelter Gala | House of Blues

A few weeks ago, while working on the house (all Theresa and I do now) and listening to 92.5FM, I heard this ad for the Friends of Boston's Homeless Beyond Shelter annual gala. Not knowing anything about the organization or what the gala was all about I contacted the events director and volunteered my photography services. It sounded like a great cause, helping Boston's homeless not only get off the streets but to get lasting housing and jobs. From their website they write, "One of the most effective solutions to homelessness is to help homeless individuals gain independence through education, employment, life skills development, and permanent housing." It's an amazing cause and come to find out it's run by some truly giving, generous and amazing people as well. I was very happy to donate my services for the evening to lend a small hand. Find out more about the event on their website, but there was live music by Mango Blue, amazing food by dozens of Boston restaurants (see the complete list here), and a great raffle. All raising money for the Friends of Boston's Homeless mission. The House of Blues was packed! Mayor Menino even came out and said a few words. Please think about attending next year as it was more than worth the price of admission. Now take a look:

Boston Red Sox | Birthday Surprise

So I'm not much of a huge 'hey look at me it's my birthday' type of person. But Theresa (who likes to celebrate her birthday 'month') talked me into doing something, but wouldn't tell me quite what. We had talked about getting a drink at the top of the Prudential building, you know something low key. She held me in suspense until right at 5pm when I was heading out to the T. I was giving her the 10th degree on what I should wear and she finally gave in and told me to get off at the Fenway T stop. Sox game, yeah! I don't know what it is about Fenway Park, but maybe it's that my Dad used to take our family to games every now and again when my brother and I were young. You enter the building and are inundated with the aroma that just means baseball, this mix of foods and beer you wouldn't consume any other day. But you let yourself go a little because being there is special, come on it's Fenway. Then you climb a flight of stairs, which reveals the field, all the colors of the game, the Green Monster. It definitely holds a place in the hearts of any real Bostonian. Theresa then she surprised me again when she arranged to have some friends show up as well, pretty cool. Of course I brought a camera to snap a few, take a look:

We were excited to photograph Emily and Brian at the Boston Harbor Hotel because what says Boston more than the waterfront and beautiful architecture. They live in Seattle but came back to Boston where all their families live to celebrate in style. We really enjoyed how they incorporated great details into the day that reflect their personalities, such as Lego figures for the seating place cards and table names such as 'light saber' (ok we're big Star Wars fans too, come on).

You all may know that Theresa's background is in cinematography so we decided to put together a little 'Fusion' movie for the wedding, the combination of our favorite still photographs with the addition of a few video clips, to really be able to tell the story of their wedding day in a much more powerful way. West Point Inn Adventure | The Inn at Mt. Tamalpais

West Point Inn | Mt. Tamalpais SP

If you're ever looking for a quick get away-from-it-all type of place definitely check out West Point Inn. It's part of Mt. Tamalpais State Park in Marin County, CA. Gorgeous, rustic little place, with a main house and a bunch of small cabins (no heat, no electricity) and perhaps the most breath-taking view north of San Francisco. I think we lucked out with some pretty clouds and sun, but that's just me. We hiked up to the cabins only a few miles, which was good because you have to bring in all your food and supplies, but once you get up there it opens up to an almost complete 180 degree view (see the panoramic below that only would do it justice if it was printed wall size). Great place for a retreat or just to step back from everything for a couple of days. We spent a few hours exploring, making a big feast in the main house and snapping some photos along the way (of course). Take a look:

Everything just came together perfectly for this shoot to happen. We knew we were heading to Cali after we attended the WPPI conference in Vegas, so we coordinated with Stephanie and Paul to hang out at a couple of their favorite places in the San Francisco area. Yes, beautiful Lands End and Baker Beach. Ok, it was a bit windy and mighty cold but at least it wasn't foggy (that was our nightmare). People who have spent any time in SF know that a day with sun is a good one. Stephanie and Paul weren't afraid to brave the elements and had a blast doing it. We can't wait to head back to CA in August for their wedding at two of our favorite places, their ceremony will be at the famous Carmel Mission and their reception will be at the always elegant Pasadera Country Club. An amazing way to ring in the New Year. Now a January 1st wedding in Boston or anywhere in New England could be a bit risky. Freezing temperatures, blizzards, ice storms or who knows could throw a little curve ball in the day. But not this year. Amanda being a math teacher was drawn to the 1.1.11 date and they were thankfully welcomed with a beautiful day for a wedding. The whole day reflected their personalities, relaxed, fun and genuine. The great staff at The Log Cabin and Brian Nicks Productions kept everything at the reception running perfectly. Now take a look:

We caught this moment where Brian reached over to wipe away Amanda's tears during the ceremony - so sweet.

Their first dance song was 'The Luckiest' by Ben Folds - there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

WPPI 2011 | Las Vegas

WPPI in Las Vegas was a whirlwind 5 jam-packed days of some of the best wedding and portrait photographers in the world. Lectures went from 8am to around 8pm, with little time in between to head to the trade show to see all the latest and great the industry has to offer. We've been inundated with amazing ideas, new products to explore and can't wait to introduce everything! To go along with the Vegas theme the word for all that is OVERLOAD. We did have a few minutes of down time to walk around on the Strip and grabbed a few pics to share:

This is a shot of Chandelier at the Cosmopolitan casino - you can actually sit inside this gigantic chandelier and have some cocktails - very cool.

Vegas brings to mind so many things, and not just because Theresa and I are completely addicted to CSI: Las Vegas (the only real CSI by the way). We are stoked to be heading to the city of sin for the Wedding and Portrait Photographer's International (WPPI) conference on Saturday! It should be a long 5 days of learning, networking with other professionals and seeing all the latest greatest new products in the wedding industry. I think people sometimes get caught up in the technical aspects of photography, all the gear, all the gadgets and all the cool new software. Nothing artistic was every created solely because of any of that. I've been getting addicted to my new camera phone, on the Droid X. Nothing fancy and it's what I have with me more often than not. Commercial Shoot | MA College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences

I was happy to hear from a graphic designer I had met at the Brain Tumor Bike Ride I photographed back in May. She now works in the admissions department at 'the oldest institution of higher education in the city of Boston' - MA College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. It was founded in 1832 and has a pretty cool location over on Longwood and some interesting architecture. Anyway, they needed some images to show off a couple of their newer computer and student study areas. It's always a fine line we photographers have to walk to capture the image without disturbing 'the moment'. Here's a few that both MCPHS and I liked:

Despite some serious chilly temperatures they were determined to have their ceremony outside shortly before sunset at the beautiful Nashoba Valley Winery. It couldn't have worked out better. We knew early on that Stephanie and Mark's wedding would be an all out blast. As soon as we met them and from their Engagement shoot, it wasn't hard to notice how easily they laugh with each other. The ceremony was at the classic New England feeling Federated Church in Sturbridge and then we made our way to Zukas Hilltop Barn. We can't say enough good things about Zukas. The staff is professional, the food is delicious and the grounds couldn't be better for photography. By the time we made it to the venue property in Spencer the bridal party was ready for nothing but fun - and the photos show it. Now take a look:

All the up-lighting and globes in the tent really added to the elegance of the party. Stephanie did an amazing job working with Zukas to make sure everything was perfect.

You might recognize Peri and Aaron from our post of their engagement shoot in Coolidge Corner here. They were so fun to work with then and it just continued on to the wedding. Having planned a daytime event at Temple Israel in Sharon, MA - they opted to see each other before the ceremony. Having a 'first meeting' is becoming more and more popular and is great for a few reasons: it's a memorable romantic moment we help plan where the bride and groom can see each other and have a special moment to themselves; it helps alleviate any butterflies before the ceremony; in case any waterfalls occur there is still time to do touch-ups to makeup; and lastly it adds another layer to the story of your weddings day where we can capture our signature fun and casual portraits of the two of you.

It was a truly great event, family and friends out for a good time dancing to the incredible band until the end. Now take a look:

Boston Engagement Photos | Fall in New England

So many fun things about this shoot. First great thing - I loved that the couple chose this location because it has real meaning for them. Second great thing - Fall in New England. Third great thing - well just that Shannon and Jonathan are so into each other and almost forgot I was there = fantabulous photos. Last great thing - a big pile of leaves! Here's the much anticipated second installment to Chelsea & Carson's gorgeous Monterey, California wedding. The Carmel Mission truly makes a unique ceremony spot if you are looking for a tradition Catholic mass. It was founded in 1771 and I believe it is the oldest mission in all of California. Not to mention there are many great little spots all within the property that make for amazing photos. Then we were off to the beautiful Pasadera Country Club with it's spectacular courtyard and impeccable staff, service and food. I don't think Chelsea and Carson could have planned or had a better time - nothing but smiles and good times from them all night, right until their last dance they lived it up. We were completely stoked when we got an inquiry from Chelsea for her wedding in Monterey, CA. What a great reason to head to the West Coast to photograph at two of our favorite locations, Carmel Mission and Pasadera Country Club, and to work with a ton of amazing people. It was just like going home. The timing of the event was perfect thanks to Amy Byrd, of Amy Byrd Wedding, and it allowed us ample time to make a lot of stunning images for our bride and groom. Chelsea and Carson's personalities are completely in sync with one another and it's amazing to see how they bring each other such joy and happiness. I think it would be really hard for these two to not have fun with each other in everything they do. And photographing them certainly shows it. There are too many images we love so we had to split this wedding into two different posts - so take a look at the first:

After traveling all over New England for so many weekends in a row, it was such a pleasure to have a wedding right in Boston. And if it's going to be in Boston, and you want to be RIGHT on the water, then please take a look at the Exchange Conference Center. Near beautiful hotels, restaurants and a short walk from Fan Pier - it has a lot to offer (and plenty of photographic opportunities as well). When I met with Bethany and Justin about a year ago I knew I wanted to photograph their wedding. Narragansett, RI is a gorgeous place to visit any day but on Caroline and Shamus' wedding day the weather was especially perfect. There was this slight crispness to the air, or maybe that was the nervousness we could sense from both the bride and the groom. Documenting all the emotions that can occur during any wedding day is one of our favorite parts of our jobs. The overwhelming joy from seeing a little cousin all dressed up, difficulty tying a tie as the ceremony time creeps near or the tears of happiness from the words of a maid of honor or best man. It's all those little things that make each wedding unique and truly special. Caroline and Shamus' day was no exception and we had an amazing time working with them. Thank you both! Now take a look:

Boston Harbor Islands

On our first weekend off in a while we decided to get out and do something different. The Boston Harbor Islands. You always see them out there and it's pretty easy to jump on the ferry, only $14, and you're on your way. We hit up Spectacle Island and George's Island and I think we all agreed George's was the way to go. It has the Historic Fort Warren on it, once a Civil War era fort then a prison. Very eerie feeling, all the decay and broken down walls. Theresa and I decided right away we have to do a shoot out there at some point. Take a look at a few from our day:

It's the ultimate compliment - when someone likes one of the images I made enough to want to live with it and purchase it. In our digital age so many of the images I really love only make it out into the world in the form of being on my art website, www.randallgarnick.com. And as nice of a way to showcase the landscape photography and abstract photography that I am passionate about - making prints, having them matted and framing them is really like breathing life into them. This was a day of firsts. Kat and Tom are living out in Berkley, California now and the day of the wedding was the first time we met. It was our first time shooting a Forth of July wedding celebration. And it was the first time we had the pleasure of photographing at the gorgeous Willowdale Estate in Topsfield. We love all these little challenges, and love it even more when everything works out to perfection. Being that Katrina is a talented artist herself, check out her work here, we wanted to incorporate some bold color, a creative viewpoint and embrace the lush backdrop that is Willowdale. Weekend Trip to Maine | The Way Life Should Be

So Theresa saw an article in Sunset magazine, probably a year ago, about the Standard Baking Company in Portland, ME. Ever since she laid her eyes upon those blueberry scones she has been obsessed. And with a rare free weekend during the busy summer wedding season we set off to get those scones. Ending up in Ogunquit, getting some r&r, and some quality beach time. If you do make it to the Standard Baking Company we highly recommend the chocolate cork and of course anything with blueberries. Here's a few of my favorites shots just wandering around:

The light was perfect and it was another hot summer night (and Peri and Aaron weren't so bad themselves). Boston Engagement Photography | Boston Public Gardens

It's summer and it's a bit blistery but Caroline and Shamus were nice enough to brave the heat (and bring a little of their own ;) for their engagement shoot in and around the Boston Public Gardens. On a random side note, if you haven't done a guided tour of the Freedom Trail, it's pretty cool, the history behind the Public Gardens and the Boston Commons - I would tell you all that I learned from the tour but I'd probably get it all wrong. I definitely recommend it even for locals and if nothing else it's a good excuse to get out and walk around the city. But back to Caroline and Shamus - they quickly warmed up to the camera and let loose to allow us to get some great shots. We can't wait to photograph their wedding at the Kinney Bungalow on Sunset Farms down in Rhode Island. Only a month away!! Now take a look:

Fine Art Photography | Print of the Month

Well from now on, monthly or as often as I can remember to do it, we will be offering one of our Fine Art prints as the Print of the Month. Each print will be a pigment on paper print, approximately 14 inches on the long side, and then matted to 16x20 with a museum quality mat board. For July we have Calla I - 2009.

When Theresa and I were living in this great little house in Monterey, CA we had a stretch of the yard that was completely Calla Lillies. And due to the Monterey climate they would all bloom in the winter, late in the year until probably April. I loved it. A constant source of inspiration, they are so delicate looking, so graceful. So after wanting to photograph them for months I finally made the time and spent an afternoon trying out different compositions, lighting situations and arrangements. This is one of the favorites. It was made using only natural light, from a window in our garage and I probably had a little bit of a fill card on the left side so the light didn't fall off too quickly. I used a simple black background to emphasize the form of the flower. It was a digital capture, using a Nikon camera, ISO 200, 1/15 of a second with an old 55mm micro lens, and I don't remember the F-stop but I chose to use a shallow depth of field to further emphasize the softness of the white tones. Enjoy.

Their wedding is at the end of the month, over at the Belmont Country Club, and like we try to tell everyone the Engagement Sessions are a kind of warm up for the big day. We get to know each other a little big, you see how we work, what our style is like and most importantly we aren't strangers when we show up on your wedding. The best photographs always happen when we spend more time with our clients. So we all raced out of the city, sat in some traffic but made it to our destination where the beautiful light was waiting for us. Beth and Steve were even troopers when the flies and mosquitoes came for us on the beach. We look forward to the wedding in only a few weeks!! Now take a look:
